Still no word from ICANN on their promised announcement directly related to Registerfly but there is evidence that they've bee hard at work and looks like they are going to be implementing policies to protect registrants should a failure like Registerfly were to ever happen again.  Recently ICANN announced (in pdf form), that they are seeking an agent to back up all Registrar data.  Please take a moment to read their latest announcement.  While this is a great thing, it's also important that this data is placed in trustworthy hands however, it's certainly a positive change.

The reality of what's happened with Registerfly

Many emails have come through the Registerflies.com account from customers of Registerfly that are crying out for help during this very difficult period.  The domino effect from the failure of Registerfly has effected both domain owners and webmasters alike.  Not only have people lost money that they've deposited in their Registerfly account but their domain names and businesses completely.  Many of webmasters have referred their customers to Registerfly while others like myself, manage domain names for both individuals and companies so that they can have peace of mind when it comes to their domain name.  Imagine trying to explain to your client that you've lost their domain name and you aren't sure if you can get it back.

I've received emails from webmasters that are up in arms about what to do and how to explain to their customers the problems.  Some customers have even threatened to sue due to the loss of their domain names that were managed by webmasters who used Registerfly.  We can only imagine what some of these folks are going through.  What about the people who recommended Registerfly to other users or to friends and family who have not only lost their domain names but also their websites that were hosted with this company... how does one explain and apologize for that?

Registerfly failed and it's not your fault

Everyone needs to understand that Registerfly failed due to a management failure within the company.  This can happen within any organization and was bound to happen in this industry at some point or another.  The problem is that the domain industry wasn't prepared for this type of failure and no systems in place to protect the registrants.  Registerfly paved the way for new procedures and policies and has opened many eyes as to just how vulnerable and infantile the domain industry really is.

In it's prime, Registerfly was one of the best domain registration sites on the net.  They had the very best interface of almost any website on the net and the features were very good as well.  Aside from the features, the prices were very competitive.  I've recommended Registerfly to others myself during the prime of Registerfly because I was so happy with the features and prices.  Registerfly could have in fact grew to be the largest domain registration company on the Internet had they secured the proper management and focused on taking care of customers properly.  It's just too bad that Registerfly came unglued and made this mess.  Please don't blame your webmasters for the failure of a company that could have happened within any company.

Calm in the middle of the storm

For everyone that has been effected by Registerfly in any fashion on any level, it's understandable how you must feel and what you may be going through as you lose your business or website or even your customers trust.  The Registerfly debacle has had a lot of negative impact on it's customers and the entire domain industry.  Some of the customers have been hurt so bad by this incident that they want to crawl in a corner and just cry... that's understandable.  I couldn't imagine being in your shoes right now.

Although I cannot help many of you, I feel compelled to offer some words of encouragement during this situation and hopefully provide a little peace of mind during this.  Understand that none of you or I could control what has happened.  Although we have a voice now that is being recognized industry wide, we cannot control what has happened and we certainly can't go back and change the past.  No matter what has happened and no matter how large the damages have been, understand that there isn't a one of you out there that wont be able to overcome this difficulty in life.  Live has a wonderful way of balancing out and rest assured you will never, ever be dealt a hand that you cannot play.  Sometimes things happen to us that look like everything is coming to an end but that's not the case.  Everything happens for a reason and every obstacle you face in life is an obstacle you can overcome... just know you can.

This little problem you and I are having right now at this point and time is a learning experience for all of us.  If we expect the worst to happen, then it will.  If we expect to overcome what looks unsurmountable then we will.  That choice is yours and yours alone.  So I encourage everyone here that is facing what looks to be the most devastating thing in their life to find the peace within themselves and to know that there is a way out and a way forward.

As I've been around the block or two a few times and had some learning experiences in my own life, I've faces situations that I thought were the end of my business and at times the end of my life.  One thing though that I learned from all of these difficulties is that for every negative there is an equal or greater positive, the difference was in my own perception.  Whether it be protons and neutrons or actions and reactions, it will all balance out in the end.  We all have a choice as to how we choose to look at the situations we face.  Once this is all over with, we'll look back on this as a great learning experience.

So for those of you out there that think this is the end of your business or the end of your life and this situation of domain names comes in the form of a mountain that you can't climb or a problem that you can't defeat.... Think again and know that you will never face a situation that you haven't been given the ability to handle and rise up out of.  Think positive and stay focused on the positive things that will come out of this very negative experience.  There will be many more bumps in the road ahead but these are only bumps and not mountains unless we choose to make them mountains.  Try to look at the positive things and not the negatives as they both stand side by side and this debacle will not defeat you.

"By a divine paradox, wherever there is one slave there are two. So in the wonderful reciprocities of being, we can never reach the higher levels until all our fellows ascend with us." - Edwin Markham

Announcement today

Due to the fact that it's Friday here in the US, I'm expecting that there will be an announcement today that will come out of ICANN.  Whatever this announcement my be and whoever gets the job of sorting this mess out we must all work together to save our domain names.  Let's look forward for better days to come as ICANN is certainly making necessary changes within the industry due to the community that we have assembled here.  Let's be supportive with whoever takes this job on and supportive of each other.

Please visit DomainPar.com for very good prices on domain names and hosting.

From the ICANN blog-

Quote:
Yes, I know, and it’s my fault for posting the news of a deal when I did. As far as I was made aware, it was all agreed, solid, and ready to go.

I don’t know the status of the deal at this moment. All I know is that there are alot of people working on it.

I might as well apologise to you all as well, having apologised to others for posting the fact that a deal had been agreed before everything was completely finalised.

We will keep you up-to-date and informed as soon as there is something absolutely solid. The danger of doing otherwise is clearly demonstrated by this post.

whizz - ICANN should use RF ... Registered | 2007-05-20 11:31:32
Well, of our 20 or so remaining domains with RegisterFly, some have now started not to work and some have "disappeared". These are actually names that are in use, for example including a base domain name that was is used to host free family websites for military personnel posted to Iraq.

300+ such family sites are now inaccessible.

Support tickets to RF have resulted in no response. Zip. Nada.

Exactly what is the great ICANN doing?

Perhaps ICANN should switch Registrars and move ICANN.ORG to RF ...

ICANN is clearly a very disappointing organization that appears to have a difficult time finding a way out of a wet paper bag. Somebody, or group of people, at ICANN who designed this "registrar/registry" nonsense in the first place needs to have their collective asses fried, slowly.

Can we sue for a refund of .25 per domain year from ICANN't? They are useless. 75,000 domains and climbing have hit the dirt on ICANN's watch. These domains should be classified as hijacked, or stolen intellectual property. Is there any truth that ICANN might be governed by the UN? They did such a good job with the oil for food program that starved Iraqi children in 1995 that Osama blamed it all on us to fuel hatred that led to 9-11. Surley they cant do worse than that with our domain bread and butter.

================================================== ====-
I have just received official notice from a member of the legal staff that helped broker,
contractually the following upcoming Mass Bulk Domain Transfer deal arrangement.

ICANN has officially authorized www.GoDaddy.com to act as the intermediary registry,
to exclusively push via a Bulk Transfer all requested "stuck Zombie Domain Names" away from ...
the troubled and scandalous ex-ICANN accredited Domain Registry www.Registerfly.com

The ICANN accredited Registry www.GoDaddy.com shall act as an instrument of communication,
to provide problem solving assistance to ICANN with there already existing "Concierge Service Dept"
for Registerfly.com "Domain Name holders" including proxy,"Protectfly WHOIS Registrants"

This long awaited development shall provide qualified Registerfly.com domain name owners ...
the opportunity to stay with Godaddy.com or to transfer to any ICANN accredited Domain Name Registry
of there choosing, as soon as the Transfer Interface is active online to perform this Global Public Service.

A press release from ICANN with the Official Start Date is expected to be announced soon!

You guys are kidding me.. GoDaddy??? Ahh crap. Now I will have to move domains again if they will be under GoDaddy.

GoDaddy was the reason why I'm with RegisterFly.... so now I will have to find someplace else for my domains. I do not trust GoDaddy because they do steal domains if they worth lots of money to sell.

Really? Can we have some examples? With statements like that I'm sure you have some evidence to prove it and I'm sure we would all like to hear what that is. I've not had a domain name stolen from me so am very interested to hear how this happened.
domain_guy - Godaddy might be a notch bette Registered | 2007-05-23 02:07:31
Godaddy has done a good job marketing themselves out from the html box and into the real world.
However, they have thier faults. It seems as per thier terms of service, they can own an expired domain 18 days past expiry. after a few thousand renews and transfers, I have allways thought there was a 45 day grace period. After 20 days my error, my former domain was pushed, renewed to another GD account that won a 2 week auction, with my same expiry date + 1 year, as opposed to a normal "new registration" reflecting a 45 day expiration. It was for my wife starting her own business. Even for sale today for $200 I wont feed into thier nonsence.
I hope Godaddy, the AOL of registrars dont profit from this mess.
