NEW YORK (AP) -- The key oversight agency for Internet addresses is reviewing the way it oversees businesses that sell domain names in the wake of financial and operational problems that left customers of one company nameless. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers already has taken steps to decertify RegisterFly.com, whose troubles it said resulted in many customers unable to renew names before they expired or to transfer them to rival registration companies, known as registrars, as required under ICANN rules.

ICANN said broader changes may be needed to prevent similar troubles in the future. Paul Levins, the agency's vice president for corporate affairs, said Monday that the existing rules were written when there was little competition among registrars, while there are about 860 today.

Paul Twomey, ICANN's chief executive, said the agency wasn't looking to increase regulation at the expense of competition.

"Levins said a lawsuit against RegisterFly was possible."

Registrfly's incompetence was brought to the attention of ICANN months and months ago... way before the recent troubles and they refused to do anything about it. Now they are talking about a lawsuit?

I am sure they will probably do this to make them look like the hero in the white hat riding in to help everyone out now that they have wide spread media attention on them.

For crying out loud, they were half the problem to begin with!

ICANN finally decided to step in once they realized that they weren't getting their $.25 fees from RegisterFly.

They just want their money, they don't give 2 shits about our domains. Way to go ICANN, way to go indeed

At least the article mentions the complete transfer of the regfly database to another registrar. I wonder who that would be.

With over 850 "Accredited" Registrars, I bet the new Registrar will be the one with the highest bid on the RF domain db, probably without any further review of their business practices or even checking on past and current customer complaints!

Call me cynical...

I've been trying to transfer my domain out from Registerfly for over a month now. I cannot get an AUTH code from either RF or ICANN.

My last request to ICANN (sent Friday March 23rd) went unanswered.

Domainmonger (the registry I wish to transfer to) keeps attempting the transfer, but without an AUTH code there is nothing I can do.

If anyone has any constructive ideas I would appreciate the help. I will write to ICANN again today.

Desperate to finish with all this "stuff"

I just obtained my Auth Code from Registerfly. This is what I did:

1. Create a new Registerfly account, It's Free;
2. Return and log into old account;
3. Click on domain name(S) you want Auth Codes for;
4. At right you will see "Change of Ownership" Click on +
5. next click on "Internal Push to Other User";
6. Follow instructions and you should see Protectfly removed with Auth Code at the bottom of the page.

You don't say if you have the dread RRP auth code, or you have NO auth code. If you just have a blank auth code -- you're most likely an enom push candidate. See the FAQ in the forum. This is good news, the enom names are easy to push to enom. The RRP is another story.

RSB - RF Support??? Registered | 2007-03-27 17:04:31
Last time I got actual contact from RF about a missing domain was 4 weeks ago. And then they simply told me, "send $60 to risk@registerfly!" I asked them what about my $118 credit in my acct with them? They replied, "Send $60". I thought I better save my domain so I sent the payment (4 weeks ago). Since then nothing.

But I was just recently able to contact the new owner of my own domain and get it back in my control for $1,000.

So much for $60. And so much for $1,000!!! In the meantime the lost & found domain is still listed in my RF acct paid up to 2008 even now!??

And they refuse to respond to any contact. When will ICANN realise the problem is the tip of the ice on Titanic. We need to be rescued!!!

Now what?

ICANN seem to be hiding their heads in the sand by not telling Registrants what is going to happen on 31st March.

ICANN, what IS going to hapen in 4 days time?

Will all RF customers magically have an ccount at another Registrar where they can access their domain names?

We need to know, NOW!

I mentioned this before in another thread here... your mileage may vary --

I FAXED RF Support (fax number is on RF website). A few days later a RF support rep contacted me by phone and has helped me get Auth codes and unlock domains. I am down to my final 2 now... hopefully she will come through for me on those... So you may try faxing.
You can try calling RF support in Miami (this is supposed to be a direct line) at 305-674-0165. (don't know if this # is still good - was a few weeks ago.
